Choosing the right formula is so important for your baby’s health and wellbeing. Why mumamoo?

mumamoo is passionate about providing infants and toddlers with the highest quality, scientifically developed formula. We are proudly 100% Australian owned and all our manufacturing (formula, tins, lids, scoops, cartons) happens right here in Australia.

mumamoo is formulated using 100% Australian cows milk. We include a unique combination of premium ingredients to meet the demanding growth and development of your little one's needs.

Our formula has been developed in conjunction with leading paediatric nutritionists to ensure it is nutritonally complete and compliant with current Australian nutritional requirements and guidelines.

mumamoo is a trusted, all Australian brand, owned by Mums. We have developed a formula we would feed our own children, from our families to yours.

How is mumamoo made?

mumamoo Infant & Toddler formula begins with a 100% Australian cow’s milk base. We source our milk from dairy farms located in the rich grass country of Eastern Australia. mumamoo is then fortified with extra nutritional elements, blending fats, proteins, carbohydrates, essential vitamins & minerals. mumamoo also contains a unique combination of added premium ingredients including Omega 3 & 6, Prebiotics & Probiotics & Nucleotides (in our Stage 1 and 2 products).

We manufacture in a state of the art highly mechanised, robotic facility right here in Australia – not offshore like many other brands. All Australian milk formula is highly regulated to comply with the standards set by Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ), so you can rest assured that mumamoo is of the highest quality and is safe for your little ones.

How do I transition my baby from their current formula to mumamoo?

We know sometimes it takes a little time to find the right formula as every baby is unique. Whether you’re introducing mumamoo for the first time or switching from another brand, a slow and gentle transition is best. We also suggest transitioning gradually between stages where possible. This gives your baby time to adjust to the new taste and smell while helping their little tummy time to adjust.

And remember, if you’re ever unsure, it’s always best to check in with your GP or healthcare professional for guidance.

How do I introduce formula for the first time?

If you’re transitioning from exclusive breastfeeding, it can be a good idea to take it slowly if you are able. This way, your baby can get used to the change in routine and diet, and your body can get used to not making milk. We understand however this may not always be possible.

Introducing a bottle is easy for some and difficult for others so know that whatever your experience you’re not alone. Our suggested transition guide can help guide you through this process

If your baby is refusing the bottle you may like to offer small sips of formula throughout the day, not as a feed but just to introduce and familiarise the taste of formula. As Mums ourselves, we’ve been through bottle refusal and understand how difficult it can sometimes be. After a few days your little one may be comfortable having a larger volume and you can then begin to transition to a feed.

Our friends at Minbie offer a great bottle with a unique teat shape to help transition from breastfeeding.

Whey to Casein Protein Ratio

Both breastmilk and cow’s milk include Whey and Casein protein. Whilst the ratio of Whey/Casein varies, the average ratio in breastmilk is 60% Whey and 40% Casein during early lactation. This then decreases to approximately 50% Whey and 50% Casein in late lactation. We have reflected this in our formulation.

Also the levels of vitamins and minerals vary slightly between stages and this is based on babies dietary needs and requirements as they grow (babies are often consuming solids between 6-12 months so receive vitamins and minerals through their food also). All mumamoo stages are formulated to Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code for your peace of mind also.

mumamoo Protein Ratio’s
Stage 1 Premium Infant Formula (0-6 Months): Whey 60%, Casein 40%
Stage 2 Premium Follow-on Formula (6-12 months): Whey 50%, Casein 50%
Stage 3 Toddler Milk Drink (1-3 years): Whey 40%, Casein 60%

What oil blend do you use in your formula?

All infant formulas, whether plant, goat or milk based, include a blend of seed oils to provide essential fatty acids to your baby, much like human breastmilk. When breastfeeding, fat is naturally provided through breast milk, and the ratio can change as the baby grows and based on the food that Mum eats. The largest percentage of fat in breastmilk comes from saturated fat, mostly palmitic acid, then monounsaturated fats, and polyunsaturated fats. While some fat comes from milk sources, either dairy or goat’s milk, most of the fat in baby formula is sourced from vegetable/seed oils. Vegetable/seed oils are safe in infant formula and used to help meet the fat and energy needs of your baby, closely mimicking the fatty acids found in breastmilk. Mumamoo has been formulated in conjunction with leading specialists in the field and Paediatric dietitians to ensure it is nutritionally complete and a premium formulation.

Our current blend is approximately:

  • 25% Soy/25% Sunflower/25% Palm/25% Coconut

Oils we consume as adults such as avocado and olive oil are not currently considered safe in infant formula as they do not provide the rich fatty acid profile that is required in formula and essential for infant growth and development.

Why Palm?
Palm oil supplies palmitic acid (PA) and is used in infant formula to help provide the correct fatty acid composition. Palmitic acid (PA) is a fatty acid which occurs in significant levels in breast milk & is the best source for supplying this to formula. Palm oil allows our formulation to be closer to breastmilk for healthy full-term babies (which we know is optimum and the absolute gold standard). We choose palm oil over other oils, because of its high quality and it does not contain excessive amounts of trans-fats derived from hydrogenation like in animal fats. While there is much talk about palm oil in formula there is also a large amount of research about its benefits (when sourced sustainably as ours is). Palm oil is the best source of palmitic acid which accounts for approximately a quarter of the fatty acid content of breast milk. Palm oil is also an excellent source of vitamin A and vitamin E. The main concern of palm oil is that it impedes calcium absorption however the decrease in calcium absorbed is compensated by an increase in calcium present in our formula. We also add prebiotics and probiotics which aids in calcium absorption.

With regard to sourcing, sustainability is core to our strategy and we only use Palm Oil from sustainable sources. Our supplier is a member of the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO), a non-profit organisation set up by World Wildlife Fund (WWF) to promote the growth and use of sustainable palm oil products. All palm products must publicly commit to “No Deforestation, No Peatland Development, and No Exploitation” and have business processes in place to meet compliance.

Why does infant formula contain seed oils?

There is a lot of misinformation about seed oils across social media currently, so it is great you are doing your research. All infant formulas, whether plant, goat or milk based, include a blend of seed oils to provide essential fatty acids to your baby, much like human breastmilk.

mumamoo’s formulation was based on experts in nutritional science to provide optimum nutrition and a complete replacement for breastmilk. The largest percentage of fat in breastmilk comes from saturated fat, mostly palmitic acid, then monounsaturated fats, and polyunsaturated fats. Vegetable/seed oils are safe in infant formula and used to help meet the fat and energy needs of your baby, closely mimicking the fatty acids found in breastmilk.

Why Are Seed Oils Used in Infant Formula?
Newborns require a lot of fat. Current research shows that around 50% of a baby’s daily calories should come from fats—primarily in the form of triglycerides. Seed oils are naturally high in unsaturated fats—both monounsaturated and polyunsaturated—while containing only small amounts of saturated fat.  Breastmilk naturally provides this balance, and infant formulas are designed to mimic this as closely as possible. To do so, all infant formula manufacturers use blends of oils, to supply specific fatty acids in the right proportions—such as palmitic acid, oleic acid, and linoleic acid. Because seed oils are rich in essential fatty acids like omega-6 and omega-3, they help ensure babies get the calories and nutrients they need to support development during this critical stage of life. The regulations around infant formula ingredients are very stringent (as we would expect for our most important little ones). mumamoo is fully compliant with the guidelines set out in Australia by FSANZ (Food Standard Australia & New Zealand).

Why the Concern About Seed Oils?
Misinformation about seed oils in formula is often due to misunderstandings about their role or effects. The reality is that all infant formulas contain a mix of vegetable oils to meet regulatory requirements, in our case those set by FSANZ Standards, for essential fatty acids.  For us too, palm oil allows our formulation to be closer to breastmilk for healthy full-term babies (which we know is optimum and the absolute gold standard).

We encourage parents to feel confident knowing that mumamoo is formulated to provide a balanced mix of fats and premium ingredients. mumamoo is made using 100% Australian cows milk and manufactured locally within Australia. Our formulation contains additional premium ingredients including Prebiotics, Probiotics, Omega 3, Omega 6 and Nucleotides (a DNA building block).
